Last weekend Maddy entered the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singers) competition for the Central Utah Chapter for the second straight year. Like last year, it was held at the BYU Harris Fine Art's Center. This year Maddy entered the 17-18 year old High School division in the Legit, Belt and Classical categories and in the first round sang 2 songs in each category. After day one, Maddy had made it into the semi-finals for Legit out of about 24 kids and into the finals for Belt out of about 12. Maddy sang great in the semi-finals and made it into the Legit finals also.
The finals were held at the Madsen Recital Hall on campus and each participant sang one song. Maddy was one of only a few singers who made the finals in more than one category in any age group. At the end of it all, Maddy came in 2nd in Belt (Meadowlark) and 2nd in Legit (Green Finch and Linnet Bird). Below are some pictures from the awards ceremony and her certificates.
As I was last year, I was proud of Maddy and how she handled the whole experience. She didn't get caught up in the competitiveness of it but instead stayed humble and her singing was beautiful. As I watched her in one of her early rounds, I sat back in amazement as she sang. I realized that she is quickly becoming her own person, far surpassing what I as a parent would ever be able to accomplish. It was a wonderful but humbling experience.
