NATS 2013

Last weekend Maddy entered the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singers) competition for the Central Utah Chapter for the second straight year. Like last year, it was held at the BYU Harris Fine Art's Center. This year Maddy entered the 17-18 year old High School division in the Legit, Belt and Classical categories and in the first round sang 2 songs in each category. After day one, Maddy had made it into the semi-finals for Legit out of about 24 kids and into the finals for Belt out of about 12. Maddy sang great in the semi-finals and made it into the Legit finals also.

The finals were held at the Madsen Recital Hall on campus and each participant sang one song. Maddy was one of only a few singers who made the finals in more than one category in any age group. At the end of it all, Maddy came in 2nd in Belt (Meadowlark) and 2nd in Legit (Green Finch and Linnet Bird). Below are some pictures from the awards ceremony and her certificates.

As I was last year, I was proud of Maddy and how she handled the whole experience. She didn't get caught up in the competitiveness of it but instead stayed humble and her singing was beautiful. As I watched her in one of her early rounds, I sat back in amazement as she sang. I realized that she is quickly becoming her own person, far surpassing what I as a parent would ever be able to accomplish. It was a wonderful but humbling experience.

Lamb of God

Last weekend I took Maddy and Joey to a concert at Abravenel Hall in Salt Lake City to see Rob Gardner's "Lamb of God" performed. It was a wonderful spiritual experience as we listened to orchestra, choir and the spoke word about the Savior's last week leading up to his death and resurrection. We love Rob Gardner's CD's including one about the Savior and one about Joseph Smith. We bought the CD after the show and have been listening to it since, especially as we prepare for Easter Sunday. If you haven't heard it, it is definitely worth the purchase.

Maddy - 2013 Preference

Yesterday Maddy and her friends went to Preference, a semi-formal dance at the High School. Maddy went with her friend Trevor from her drama class and school choirs. They went to Chilis for dinner, went to the dance, serenaded their choir director at his home and ended the night with some ice cream at another girl's home. Jeni and I are so grateful that Maddy has such good friends and that they enjoy good wholesome fun together and share the same passion for music and theater.
