To Chew or Not to Chew

Those of you that know Madelyn know that she can be very particular about some things, okay, about most things. This has been a great quality in many ways but at times it can go a little bit overboard, okay, a lot overboard. Though we've grown up with her having to have the lines in her socks perfectly aligned, her clothes ironed immaculately, and every hair in the right place, her latest "quest for perfection" tops them all.

Jeni bought Maddy some beautiful new clothes for Church including some new dresses, shoes, etc. to celebrate Maddy advancing into Young Women's next Sunday. One of the pairs of shoes was silver and had an extremely shiny section on the front of each which Maddy loved. After trying them on and getting so excited, Maddy set them aside on the couch. Enter Baxter, who loves shoes and loves shiny objects. The temptation was too much for him and before Maddy knew what was happening, Baxter had chewed the front of one of the shoes, causing major scratching on the shiny part. Maddy was very upset, both at Baxter and at the injustice of it all. That was a few days ago.

Today, on our way to Church, I saw that Maddy was wearing the shoes but now the front part was scratched on both of them. I asked her if Baxter had found the other shoe. "No Dad, I chewed it myself so that they would both match." She even showed me with her teeth how she did this. The picture above is Maddy wearing the shoes AFTER her chewing adventure.

See if you can tell which teeth marks are Maddy's and which ones are Baxters!

We are Thankful

Today we hosted Thanksgiving dinner for our family, Jeni's sister Rebecca, brother Bob and his wife Carin and family, and brothers Scott and Steven. The food was great and the conversation was even better. Here are some pictures!

Family Home Evening

A few months ago, Jeni felt impressed to put together a year's worth of sequential Family Night topics and it has been a great blessing to our family.

Things went really well the first few weeks and we were feeling pretty good about ourselves... until the topic one Monday night was "The Ten Commandments." We thought it would be fun to do a scripture chase and see who could find them in Exodus the fastest.

We started the race with "Find the 10 Commandments!" and both Maddie and Joey just sat there looking at each other, scriptures on their laps. After a few uncomfortable moments and glances back and forth, one of them spoke up for both and protested saying "Do we have to find ALL of them? That will take forever!"

Evidently the story of Moses in Exodus 20 had been forgotten. So much for our great teaching abilities!

Pictures - Finally!

After several years (ok, 10 years to the month), we decided to get the kids pictures taken again professionally. It was a fun experience and here are the results.

For fun, I'll include some of the kids' pictures from the last time we had them taken - you can see how long ago it was!

Halloween 2007

We thought it would be fun to create our own blog, especially with the Holidays coming up so here's our first post!

Halloween this year was different than most. Madelyn came home sick from school and spent the night on the couch throwing up. Its the first halloween in the history of our family when one child ate absolutely NO candy! And the other (Joey) only brought home a few pieces.

Here's a picture of Baxter (our Shih-Tzu / St. Bernard / who knows what else / supposed pure-bred dog), Joey as Frodo and Jeni and I as tacky travelers. Enjoy!
